Besides being the place of my birth, Michigan and I have many ties and connections. Detroit is my first city, where born, worked, schooled and where I was when the “Rebellion” as some have called it occurred in 1967.
My mother was in Detroit when there was racial unrest in the '40's. My father still lives in Michigan as does my wife's mother. My grand parents lived there.
In the Spring of 2008 the family visited Oma Downey, Gabriela's mother. Steel, Salt and Rust was the slide show from that Spring Trip.
We returned to Michigan for a Michigan Summer later in 2008 and as a group spent a week in Traverse City on Lake Michigan. Joining us were Stephen Downey, Gabriela's brother and his wife Catherine and their son Mark and family friend Harry. We also spent time in Allen Park where Oma lives during that summer trip to Michigan.
