Broccoli for fall harvest

The garden year seems to be ending the way it began wet and cool. It is my habit to water the garden on my way to work or on the way home. Beginning this month there has been no need to water. Every month this summer has had more than average rainfall. September began with a couple of rainfalls that were more like November rain.

And so I see the tomato plants hanging in there like they had to do in May when we got a lot of rain and cool weather. This month I also harvested a couple of beats and the last of the beans. I am very pleased that back in July I started from seed some broccoli and I expect a late fall harvest of broccoli. I have two squash plants that are taking up about a third of the garden and they are very prolific.

Like last year when I had to be very creative and how I used tomatoes, this year I search for new ways to cook zucchini squash.

The other bright spot in the garden this year is the fact that I planted six different types of tomatoes and while I have often called these tomatoes “survivors”, I am enjoying a wider variety of tomatoes this year than last when I only planted two different types from seed. It seems I have also learned that the best time to plant the broccoli is

Midsummer when the slugs are less prevalent.

As we approach the end of September the end game of the garden comes into view. I am beginning to think about what to do with the areas on the peripheral of the garden that are grass and weed infested so that they can be more productive next year.
