Late September Harvest Click to enlarge

After the amazing tomato crop it was disappointing to see the tomato plants drying up and dying, a bit prematurely? They were so productive and early and so during the month taking out the tomato plants was sad.

The cucumbers followed a couple of weeks later. Peppers and spinach continued to grow and produce the two late broccoli plants continued to grow even as I took out the lettuce and beans that had provided them shade during the hot weather. Others in the community garden had tomatoes after my plants were gone but mine were early and very productive. I will grow these early varieties of tomatoes next year with a later variety of larger tomatoes and fewer plans.

We got the normal amount of rain for the month while still reaching the record for ninety degree days for the summer at eleven.

I am getting to the lessons learned part of the year. Grow more beans, fewer cucumbers, a water mellow perhaps, more spinach and lettuce, stick with the standard green peppers, I like them best. I will start more late broccoli, the early stuff is nice but I think the slugs feast on them. The sweet peas were just about right, maybe stagger their planting a bit. I will plant green beans every three weeks for two months. I am wondering what soil amendments to add. The texture of the soil is much better especially near the front of the garden. I will surely add more organic material.
