Staked Peas

Another wet month. The peas in the garden are the bright spot. This month I set up some poles and string for the peas to climb and attach themselves. I went to Portland Nursery, the big and even better nursery than I remember on the east side on a warm afternoon and purchased six different types of tomatoes and a couple of pepper plants.
I began worrying about the weather for the tomato plants and decided to put them in the garden one week later than last year, May 23, 2010. Week prior, 15th - 22nd had mid-west type down pours. My Oregonian co-worker said she'd never seen anything like it. We had very high winds and so postponing the tomatoes was a wise decision. I did plant squash seeds and some little cucumber starts and sun flower starts the weekend of the 15th.
Very disappointing is the beating the broccoli and lettuce has taken from the slugs. The Sluggo is not very effective with the frequent rain or the slugs are not interested and go for the vegetables.
This is clearly not like last year. We have had several days when it didn't get to 60 degree and started in the mid-40's. Of course I am hoping for the traditional Memorial Day weekend warm up to help the tomatoes move along and the other warm weather vegetables, but this too was not to be.
After putting in tomatoes and peppers on May 23rd, the damp weather continues and it appears we are headed to one of the wettest months of May in the last seventy years! The tomatoes and peppers are surviving but they too are being eaten by slugs.
