August was a dry month, a trace of rain at the beginning of the month and a trace at the end. This was the month that we went to San Francisco and Napa/Sonoma and so I was gone from the 6th to the 19th. I was worried about the garden, being gone so long and so at the beginning of the month I dug in more leaves and put in some fertilizer.
I watered the garden the day before we left and the morning after we returned. There was no damage even though we got a significant temperature spike while we were gone for a long weekend August 16-20th, Friday-Tuesday, temperatures in the 90's.
I have been very successful with zuccini, two plants producing more than enough. The beans have been very productive and of course the tomatoes green. I did harvest the first tomatoes on the last weekend of the month. Cucumbers have been coming since late July.
One of the best things I did was plant some Broccoli seeds in July. In August I have some healthy plants that I hope will produce in the fall. I have had minimual slug problems with the broccoli at this time of year. I have yet to see how these plants do as the weather cools. The summer has been 3.3 degrees below normal, most people would concur it has been a cooler than normal summer. The same weather data gave last summer, Tomato summer, a 9.9 above normal temperature.
