Lettuce
With March being so cool and April starting cool, especially in the morning, I delayed visiting the garden. I expected the worse. My peas, my broccoli. I didn't expect much either dead from the weather or eaten by the slugs was my best guess.
Like last year these plants are like my children, I dreaded the visit and bad news. When I visited in early April I was pleased to see the peas had all come up and four of the seven broccoli plants were looking good, adolescent plants.
The second weekend in April I went to the garden early. It was still cool and quite windy but promising a 60 degree day. I had small carrot plants and lettuce plants I have been nurturing for about a month. Most of the time in the green house, getting them ready for the cool weather and ground. On the 10th I planted the carrot, lettuce, two more rows of peas, and some beets. It did warm to 60 and the winds calmed in the afternoon.
April was a wet month, we tied the record for days with rain in the month twenty five days! The last week of the month I got some lettuce and broccoli starts. The peas are doing well. Carrots and lettuce that I started from home have not been successful transplants. It has been a disappointing month from a gardener's perspective, too cool and wet. We hope for better from May.
